Family Mediation

What is mediation?

Mediation is a confidential, voluntary process that focuses on self-determination through informed consent and a balance of power.

In other words, mediators aim for all parties to be sufficiently informed and for the power between them to be sufficiently balanced, in order that each party can make what they consider to be their best choices toward resolving the matter at hand.

In this way mediators could be called “process experts:” people with communication training who help others through difficult, but necessary, conversations.

For example, mediators remain neutral and impartial, not favouring either party or their perspective on the matter. Yet mediators also recognize that difficult conversations entail difficult emotions, and so they understand how to navigate emotionally charged situations and empower participants to come to productive resolutions.
